Hibernation is over!

Aloha All!

It’s official! I turned in TWO TO MANGO this week. It’s off my desk for a while, off to the Belles at Bell Books, my publishers, who have big plans for the June release of the 2nd book in The Tiki Goddess Mystery Series.

I’ve been locked in the house for almost three months. Not exactly on food and water only, and I did leave the house for hula classes, but that’s about it. Two people have / or are reading TWO TO MANGO.

One is my friend and writer Stella Cameron who is here on island this month. She proof read for typos in record time and was a real champ. Mahalo, Stella!

Stella Cameron author of bestselling paranormal suspense.

Stella's Latest Bestseller Darkness Bound

The second is my hubby Steve. He likes to “savor” a book (which means he takes his time.) He’s reading the manuscript and I keep hearing belly laughs and chuckles. That’s a good sign.

So before I go off to celebrate again (third night in a row) I’ll give you a sneak preview of the TWO TO MANGO cover!

What a great cover! Coming in June 2012!

Any guesses as to what trouble the Hula Maidens might get into this time?

Leave a comment and let me know!

Aloha,

What’s a Tiki Goddess?

Aloha from Tiki-land,
What is a Tiki Goddess? Well to me, it’s any forward thinking gal who walks to the beat of the tiki drums and isn’t afraid to step out of the box. I have a wonderful space where friends hang out and share music, dance, talk story, sip tropical drinks and just have fun.

A friend of mine, Grace Hodgson, who not only plays the violin, ukulele and recently added the stand up bass to her list of musical accomplishments, is also wonderfully talented artist. View some of her work at:  www.imakeart.com

Grace’s main interest has always been the human face and figure. She says, “I can’t think of anything more intriguing than the human face or the opportunity to depict a human personality.”

One day Grace shared that she had always dreamed of holding a gathering of artists once a month but needed a venue. I thought it sounded like a great idea and offered the Tiki Port.

Grace Hodgson's Portrait Entitled: Kumu

Patterned after a website named Dr. Sketchy, a select group of Grace’s artist friends meet once a month to sip wine, listen to great blues, and sketch live models. Unlike the Dr. Sketchy website idea…Grace’s models aren’t showing any racy body parts. I told her the neighbors couldn’t take it.

With so many Goddesses in our circle of friends, there is no shortage of enthusiastic (aka wild and crazy) gals who want to dress up and pose on a Friday afternoon.

Goddess Julie poses for sketchy group

Goddess Julie, hula and belly dancer with an overflowing heart full of fun and plenty of personality, posed at their first meeting. Her costume was an eclectic mix of clothing from the costume shop she once owned. (I have noticed that the Goddesses around here have had many life chapters, changes, and careers.) Everyone loved the bobbing fuzzy pompons on Jullie’s hairband and her “serving wench” attire.

Julie turned on her killer smile for the DaVincis who assembled to launch Grace’s dream that day and everyone had a great time.

Smile Julie!

The next model was Anna who appears to have been inspired by Dr. Seuss’s Cat in the Hat. She looked absolutely adorable in her colorful garb. The folks at the Tahiti Nui Bar and Restaurant in Hanalei thought so too when Anna dropped by on the way home to “Mai Tai on On” after her modeling session.

Anna's Whimsical Costume was a Hit

As you can see by the sketch below, Grace had no problem at all catching Anna’s adorable Goddess attitude.

And speaking of attitude! Hula dancer Sandy, another Goddess of much renown, came in hula finery. Sandy really got into the mood by perfecting and holding a May West pose. She also had no idea her appendix would need to be removed in emergency surgery a few days later!

Sandy’s hip-length, flame red hair is stunning, as is her teasing smile. A good time was had by all that day.

I’ll post some more photos soon and hopefully include some sketches by the other artists.

The Tiki Goddesses I know come in all ages, shapes, sizes and colors. They are fearless. They know the key to life is to have fun, laugh, and that life is too short to worry about what the world might think of them.

Maybe there is a Goddess in you?  Leave a comment and let us know. Pass this blog along to any of your friends who might enjoy it too!

Until next time….mahalo!

Secret Location?

Aloha All from Tikiland,

Where do you get your ideas?

Since the publication of MAI TAI ONE ON, I’m often asked how I come up with all the laughs, murder and mayhem. Actually, it’s easy when you live on an island full of characters. A friend of ours once dubbed this place Muppet Island. He thought everyone was sort of like a Muppet puppet and I can’t really disagree. All I have to do is wander around, keep my eyes and ears open, and then come home and cut and paste and add some far fetched fiction to create new characters out of the seeds that are planted in my brain during jaunts around town.

Always inspired by the local talent!

Is the “Tiki Goddess Bar” in MAI TAI ONE ON a real place?

Actually no, but we have something close to it in Hanalei.

Real honest to goodness Tiki Bars are few and far between anymore but I’m happy to say they are making a comeback thanks to authors like James Teitelbaum who wrote “Tiki Road Trip; a Guide to Tiki Culture in North America.” In the book’s forward by Sven A Kirsten, (who wrote The Book of Tiki, a must have classic)  “The Golden Age of the Tiki Bar might never return, but its recognition as a unique American pop culture phenomenon will no longer be deined.”

Tiki Road Trip is a great guide to Tiki Bars, Restaurants and Hotels across America. They even rate places for a “Tipsy Factor.” This is the book to have in hand if you are heading out on a road trip across the country. (It’s probably best to check on line or call the places listed to be sure they are still in business. Alas, some of the great tiki establishments have paddled on into the land of legend.

But let’s say you’re driving around in Tennessee and you’re craving a place with a “Tipsy Factor” of 4 then look no further than the Omni Hut on Lowry Street in Smyra, Tennessee. There are two dining rooms, an indoor waterfall, lots of clamshells, bamboo, glass ball floats and fake tropical flowers. Music is a mix of Martin Denny, Don Ho and traditional Hawaiian. Hey, maybe if they want some live music I can talk my hubby into flying there to play Slack-Key some weekend.

So the “Tiki Goddess Bar” in my mystery series is fictional, but here’s a hint of where you might find me with a notebook and pen in hand, doing research as I lurk in a shadowy corner of the room where the the light from the glass float lamps doesn’t shine.

Not Really The Tiki Goddess Bar But Close

Anyone recognize this place? Hint: It’s on Kauai and The Tiki Road Trip Guide gives it a Tipsy Factor of 3.

Leave a comment if you think you know where to find me.

Until Next Time, Tiki On !

Fall Celebrations

Aloooha!
Lots going on here in Aloha-land as Fall turns into Christmas and Holiday time. A newsletter will be coming your way soon with all the Christmas e-book specials I have going in in both of my incarnations…as the cozy/funny mystery writer and as my alter ego Jill Marie Landis.

We celebrated MAI TAI ONE ON with an autograph party at the Tahiti Nui Bar and Restaurant in Hanalei at the end of October. My hula sisters, Bev and Pat Kauanui, The Pono Kane Trio, the Ukulele class and half the town partied until not one book was left. The unshakable Robin Savage of Robin Savage Gifts (where you can find copies of the book in Hanalei) remained calm and took orders for more. A good time was had by all, especially me!

The shades help.

We celebrated Thanksgiving with neighbors in the “hood” as we call our enclave of hip oldsters. Everywhere you look there is bounty and greenery.

I can’t believe it’s time for the Holidays. Christmas is almost here and the town is starting to take on a festive glow. Nothing compared to the mainland but there are holiday reminders scattered around the local Ching Young shopping center and Hanalei town.

How Much is That Tiki In the Window?

There’s no snow but even Santa has made an appearance between the tiki torches in front of a local restaurant on the corner of Aku Road and the Highway.
